    Lamar County Rail Town

    Listings in Roxton, TX

Welcome to Roxton, a small Lamar County city in Northeast Texas, set along the Northeast Texas Trail in the Red River valley.

Roxton is a small city in Lamar County, Texas, in the northeastern part of the state within the Red River valley. Its population is roughly 400. The community's history reflects the classic Northeast Texas pattern of a pioneer settlement reshaped by the railroad: it began as Fort Shelton, and when the rail line arrived, most of the town relocated to the tracks, leaving the original townsite to be remembered as Old Roxton. The railroad era brought growth. Roxton counted 226 residents in 1890 and climbed to about 1,200 by 1914, functioning as an agricultural shipping and trade center for the surrounding farmland. Cotton and other crops moved through the town, and local businesses served the rural population of eastern Lamar County. Today Roxton is a quiet, small community whose economy and identity remain tied to the land. Homes, churches, and a few local businesses cluster near the center of town, surrounded by the open fields and timber that characterize this corner of the county. The city is served by the Chisum Independent School District, which absorbed the former Roxton Independent School District when it consolidated in 2019 due to financial hardship. A notable feature of modern Roxton is the Northeast Texas Trail, a 130-mile hike-and-bike trail that follows a disused railroad right-of-way from Farmersville to New Boston. The trail passes through or near the community, giving residents and visitors a long-distance recreational route through the region's countryside. Roxton's location places it within reach of Paris, the Lamar County seat, for shopping, services, and employment, while the town itself maintains a rural, unhurried pace. For residents, Roxton offers the simplicity of small-town living with regional amenities a short drive away, defined by its rail-era past, its agricultural present, and the wide Northeast Texas landscape around it.

    City Guide

    About Roxton

    Real Estate & Housing

Roxton's housing stock is modest and small-town, consisting largely of older single-family homes on town lots, with larger acreage and rural parcels available on the outskirts. Many homes date from the town's early- to mid-20th-century peak, and the market reflects a stable, rural community rather than new subdivision growth. Homes are generally smaller in scale and owner-occupied. The surrounding farmland offers opportunities for those seeking space, pasture, or a quieter country setting within Lamar County.

    Neighborhoods

Roxton is small enough to be understood as a single community. A compact grid of residential streets surrounds the center of town, where the rail-era commercial buildings and churches remain. The edges of the city give way quickly to farmland and timber. The old townsite — remembered as Old Roxton — reflects the community's relocation toward the railroad. Newer and older homes mix within the same blocks, keeping the town's scale intimate and its character rooted in its history.

    Lifestyle in Roxton

Life in Roxton is quiet and rural, shaped by agriculture, church, school, and the rhythms of a small Northeast Texas town. Community life centers on the schools, churches, and local gatherings, and the pace is unhurried. The Northeast Texas Trail brings walkers, runners, and cyclists through the countryside, adding a recreational dimension to daily life. Paris, the county seat, provides retail and services within a drive, while Roxton itself offers space and a slower way of life.

    Schools & Education

Roxton is served by the Chisum Independent School District, which took on the city's students when the former Roxton Independent School District consolidated into Chisum ISD in 2019 after financial difficulties. Students attend Chisum ISD campuses in the surrounding area. The Texas Education Code places all of Lamar County within the service area of Paris Junior College, giving residents access to higher education in nearby Paris.

    Getting Around

Roxton sits in eastern Lamar County, reached by state and county roads that connect it to Paris and the surrounding farm communities. The Northeast Texas Trail follows a former railroad corridor through the area, serving cyclists and pedestrians rather than vehicles. Personal vehicles are essential for daily travel, and the nearest retail, medical, and employment centers are in Paris. The town has no fixed-route transit.

    Parks & Recreation

The Northeast Texas Trail is Roxton's most distinctive recreational feature — a 130-mile hike-and-bike route along a disused railroad right-of-way that passes through the region from Farmersville to New Boston. The surrounding countryside supports hunting, fishing, and outdoor activities common to Northeast Texas, and nearby Paris offers parks, lakes, and organized recreation. School athletics and community events round out the local recreation scene.
