    West Texas Plains Railroad Town

    Listings in Rule, TX

Welcome to Rule, a small Haskell County town on US 380 in the West Texas plains, founded by the coming of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway.

Rule is a small town in western Haskell County, in the West Texas plains about 55 miles north of Abilene, at the intersection of US 380 and State Highway 6. The community was established in anticipation of the arrival of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway, and it was named for William A. Rule Sr., a railroad official. A post office opened in 1903, and the first train arrived in 1905, cementing the town's place as a rail-era trading point for the surrounding farm and ranch country. In its early decades Rule grew around its depot with the customary businesses of a plains railroad town — general stores, cotton facilities, churches, and a school — and it became the principal settlement for the farms and ranches that surround it. Cotton, grain, and cattle drove the local economy through much of the twentieth century. The town's footprint has always been compact, covering about 0.7 square miles, and its population has settled near 570 after peaking earlier in the century. Today Rule retains the institutions of a functioning small community. It is served by Rule Independent School District, home of Rule High School, which keeps education close to home for area families. The town sits along the US 380 corridor between Haskell to the west and Stamford to the east, placing it within reach of both neighboring towns and the larger center of Abilene to the south. Residents value the quiet, wide-open character of the plains, strong community ties, and the unhurried pace of rural West Texas life. For those seeking a small-town setting rooted in the region's railroad and agricultural past, Rule offers a genuine slice of West Texas.

    City Guide

    About Rule

    Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Rule is characteristic of a compact West Texas plains town: modest single-family homes on a small grid of residential streets, with older early-to-mid-20th-century stock near the center and room to spread out at the edges. The town covers about 0.7 square miles, so neighborhoods remain walkable and close to the school and businesses. The housing character is settled and established rather than oriented toward new large-scale development, reflecting a community whose population has stabilized around 570. Surrounding acreage and farmland are available for those seeking a more rural homestead.

    Neighborhoods

Rule's compact layout centers on a small downtown area near the old railroad alignment, with residential streets extending outward toward the school campus. Because the town spans less than a square mile, there are no distinct named subdivisions; instead, homes cluster along a simple grid that transitions quickly into open farmland and ranchland. This arrangement keeps the school, churches, and businesses within easy reach of nearly every home, reinforcing the close-knit, small-town character that defines daily life in Rule.

    Lifestyle in Rule

Life in Rule is quiet and community-centered, revolving around the school, churches, and the farming and ranching calendar of the surrounding plains. The town's small size fosters close relationships among neighbors, and local events often center on the school and civic organizations. Residents value the wide-open landscape, the low cost of rural living, and the unhurried pace of a West Texas small town. Its position between Haskell and Stamford, and within an hour's drive of Abilene, keeps larger services and employment within reach while daily life stays rooted in the community.

    Schools & Education

Rule is served by the Rule Independent School District, a small rural Haskell County district that operates Rule High School and serves students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The compact district keeps education close to home, with students attending school within their own community rather than traveling to a larger neighboring system. The school is a central institution in town life, and its small enrollment supports close relationships between families and staff. Regional higher education and additional services are available in Abilene, about 55 miles to the south.

    Getting Around

Rule sits at the junction of US 380 and State Highway 6 in western Haskell County, giving the town direct connections east toward Stamford, west toward Haskell, and south toward Abilene. The community's founding followed the arrival of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway, whose first train reached Rule in 1905. Today the two highways carry local traffic, with US 380 serving as the principal east-west corridor across the region and Abilene reachable about 55 miles to the south for larger-city services and the regional airport.

    Parks & Recreation

Recreation in Rule is tied to the rural West Texas landscape, with hunting, open-country pastimes, and community gatherings forming the core of local leisure. School athletics bring residents together throughout the year, and churches and civic groups anchor the social calendar. The surrounding plains offer wide-open space and a rural setting removed from city congestion. For larger recreational amenities, Abilene and the lakes and parks of the broader region lie within a drive to the south and east.
