Most errands beyond the basics involve a drive along U.S. 59, but the small-town, close-knit character keeps daily life local.

Goodrich Independent School District serves the city and surrounding area with a small, close-knit school system of about 250 to 270 students across its campuses. The district's landmark school building, designed by architect Emory White and designated a recorded Texas Landmark, has been a community anchor for generations. In 1980, voters rejected a proposed consolidation with Livingston ISD, preserving the district's independence. The small size keeps students close to home and the school central to civic life.

U.S. Highway 59, co-signed with Interstate 69 through the area, is Goodrich's main artery, running north to Livingston and south toward Houston and its northern suburbs. The town lies roughly ten miles south of Livingston, the Polk County seat, and within about an hour's drive of central Houston. There is no local transit, so travel is by car, and the 59 corridor also carries traffic to Lake Livingston's recreation areas and to the broader East Texas region.

Lake Livingston, the second-largest lake entirely within Texas, is Goodrich's defining recreation asset. Its shoreline, boat ramps, and fishing waters lie just beyond town, offering bass and catfish angling, boating, and waterskiing. The surrounding Piney Woods support hunting and outdoor pursuits, while Lake Livingston State Park, on the lake near Livingston, adds camping, trails, and swimming within a short drive. Houston's attractions are also within reach via U.S. 59.
